The gene for red hair is recessive ie it requires the gene to be passed on from each parent..And only if both the genes(gotten repectively from each parent) code for red hair will a person have red hair.

Now the parents may not have red hair but they could be carrying the gene and so could their relatives without having red hair.

I have red (aurburn-dark red) hair...that being said, the gene for red hair is really prevelant on my father's side of the family
